THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE – Fire activity remains steady in the Northeast Fire Region, with no new wildfires confirmed on Thursday, June 26, according to the latest update from Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES).

Currently, there are four active fires in the Northeast Region:

  • Two fires are under control

  • Two fires are being observed

Fire Hazard Outlook

The fire hazard across much of northeastern Ontario remains moderate to high, especially in northern and eastern areas. However, conditions are more favourable in the central corridor, stretching from Sault Ste. Marie east to the Quebec border, and extending south to Gravenhurst, where the fire hazard is currently low.

Residents and visitors can monitor local wildfire risk using Ontario’s Interactive Fire Hazard Map for up-to-date regional conditions.

Public Safety Reminder: No Drone Zone

AFFES is reminding the public that operating drones near wildfires is both illegal and dangerous. Unauthorized drone use can interfere with aerial suppression efforts and put the lives of firefighters and pilots at risk. All drones must be kept far from active fire zones.

Outdoor Burning Rules Still in Effect

With wildfire risk still elevated, Ontarians are reminded to follow strict outdoor burning regulations:

  • Fires may be lit only within two hours before sunset

  • They must be fully extinguished by two hours after sunrise

  • Water and firefighting tools must be readily available at all times

Where possible, consider composting or landfill disposal for yard waste and woody debris instead of burning. Non-compliance may lead to fines or cost-recovery charges for suppression operations. For full details, consult the Outdoor Burning Regulations.

Report Wildland Fires Immediately

If you see a wildfire:

  • North of the French and Mattawa Rivers – Call 310-FIRE (3473)

  • South of the French or Mattawa Rivers – Call 9-1-1
