Wildfire Update

THUNDER BAY – Wildfire Update – Rain and thunderstorms over the weekend have not seen a great number of new fires, yet. It will likely be reported in the Monday Evening report.

➡️ New Fire Activity:

  • Kenora 44 (KEN044): A small 0.1 hectare fire was discovered on June 21, located about 1.8 km south of Umfreville Lake (near Goshawk Lake). It is now out, with no new fires detected by the evening of June 22.

🔥 Active Fires (Total: 23):

  • 2 are not under control

  • 3 are being held

  • 5 are under control

  • 13 are being observed

📊 Fire Hazard Level:

  • Low in most of Northwest Region

  • Moderate to High in Far North sectors of Red Lake and Sioux Lookout

Fires of Note

Red Lake 12 – Deer Lake & Sandy Lake First Nations

  • Expanded to 194,127 hectares, remains not under control.

  • Rainfall boosts: Deer Lake 4.6 mm, Sandy Lake 1.3 mm.

  • Resources: 24 crews, 18 helicopters (including four heavy-lift units).

  • Weather: Northeasterly winds aided eastern containment; western flank remains active. Heavy helicopters continue suppressing southern areas.

  • NOTAM in effect restricting airspace within 5 NM and 3,000 ft AGL; refer to NavCanada’s flight systems.

Sioux Lookout 18 – Cat Lake First Nation

  • Holding steady at 23,816 hectares, not under control.

  • Deployment: 10 fires crews, 1 Incident Management Team, 5 helicopters.

  • Weather: Sunday brought rain and lightning; crews remain alert for holdover fires.

  • FireRangers are advancing containment along the southern and southwest perimeters.

Nipigon 5 – Webequie First Nation

  • At 10,816 hectares, this fire is now held.

  • Current efforts focus on mop-up operations.

  • NOTAM in effect, same restricted airspace as above.


Northeast Fire Region

Updated: June 22, 2025 – 17:45 EDT

  • No new fires detected today.

  • Active Fires (5 total): 1 not under control, 1 being held, 2 observed, 1 under control.

  • Fire hazard remains Low throughout the region.

  • No wildfire restrictions currently in effect.

Public Safety Reminder

  • No Drone Zone: Operating drones near wildfires is illegal and endangers firefighting aircraft and personnel.

  • Burn Safely: Only burn between 2 hours before sunset and 2 hours after sunrise, with proper extinguishing tools and water nearby.

  • To Report Fires:

    • North of French/Mattawa rivers: 310-FIRE

    • South of those rivers: 9-1-1
