Wildfire Smoke Returns to Eastern Lac Seul – Health Advisory in Effect

Tuesday, June 17 – Hazy Skies, Thunderstorm Risks, and A Breath to Watch

Smoky skies are rolling back into Sioux Lookout this morning as wildfire smoke from northwestern Ontario makes its presence known once again. A Special Air Quality Statement has been issued, warning residents to brace for poor air quality and reduced visibility throughout the day. Air quality is expected to improve tonight as winds shift to westerly, but until then, vulnerable groups — including seniors, children, and those with health conditions — should limit outdoor exposure.

Currently, the temperature is 13.9°C under partly cloudy skies, with 87% humidity and light winds from the south at 5 km/h. Barometric pressure is falling at 101.3 kPa, setting the stage for weather changes later today.

Today’s forecast calls for mainly cloudy conditions with a 60% chance of showers and the risk of an afternoon thunderstorm. Smoke will continue to hang in the air, making outdoor activities unpleasant and potentially hazardous. Winds will pick up out of the north at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h this afternoon. Expect a high of 22°C, feeling like 25 with the humidex. The UV index is 7, so any time spent outdoors should include sun protection — and possibly a respirator mask if air quality deteriorates.

Tonight – Clearing Skies but Smoke Still Lingers

There’s still a 60% chance of evening showers, with the risk of a thunderstorm, but skies will clear overnight. Smoke will remain present, so keep those windows shut and air purifiers humming. The temperature will dip to a low of 12°C.

Wednesday, June 18 – Sunshine’s Back, But Thunder Lurks Again

Wednesday will begin sunny, but clouds will roll in by noon. There’s a 40% chance of showers late in the afternoon, and yes — thunderstorms remain a risk. Highs will reach 23°C, and the UV index climbs to 7, so be sure to protect yourself if heading outside. Showers could continue into the evening, with 30% cloud cover overnight and a low of 10°C.

Looking Ahead – Mixed Skies and More Moisture Potential

Thursday looks like a relatively calm mix of sun and cloud with a high of 23°C, but Friday brings an uptick in moisture, with a 40% chance of rain and a high of 22°C. Smoky skies may continue to make intermittent appearances depending on wildfire activity and wind direction.

What to Wear Today

You’ll need a layered outfit today — something breathable but protective. Quick-dry pants, a long-sleeved shirt for both sun and smoke, and if you must be outside for extended periods, consider a NIOSH-certified N95 mask. Don’t forget an umbrella or light rain jacket for those stormy moments.

Weather Trivia – Sioux Lookout’s Smoky Summers

Did you know? Sioux Lookout has earned the nickname “Hub of the North” — and in wildfire season, it often becomes a logistical centre for firefighting air support. Unfortunately, that also means it can sit directly in the path of drifting wildfire smoke, especially when northerly winds prevail.
