THUNDER BAY – ENTERTAINMENT – Magnus Theatre kicks off the New Year with the Pulitzer Prize winning play, Driving Miss Daisy.  A story of an unlikely friendship between Daisy (played by Thunder Bay’s own Jo-Ann Waytowich), a strong-willed southern matron, and Hoke (played by John Campbell), her equally indomitable black chauffeur. Daisy, a 72-year-old wealthy widow, is reluctant to accept help from anyone, especially the new chauffeur hired by her son, Boolie (played by Stuart Dowling). Over the course of 25 years, the two have plenty of time to explore each other’s quirks as they share humourous  adventures and develop a relationship that grows from one of necessity to one of companionship and friendship.

“I was very honoured to direct this Pultizer Prize winning play for the Artsclub Theatre in Vancouver in December 2013, and I am very pleased that this season we are able to share this extraordinary play, featuring Jo-Ann Waytowich in the title role, with our Thunder Bay audiences,” said Artistic Director Mario Crudo.

Jo-Ann Waytowich, best known to Thunder Bay audiences as the irrepressible Ivanka, is excited to return to the spotlight in a very different role. Jo-Ann was last seen on the Magnus stage in The Long Weekend by Norm Foster.

Both Stuart Dowling and John Campbell are no stranger to Driving Miss Daisy. Last season Campbell played Miss Daisy’s chauffeur at the Vancouver Artsclub Theatre production directed by Mario Crudo. Campbell has also appeared on CTV’s Flashpoint and Lifetime’s Missing.

Dowling played Boolie, Miss Daisy’s son, last May at Port Hope’s Capital Theatre. He also recently appeared in West Side Story and Of Mice and Men, where he was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for his portrayal of Lennie.

Driving Miss Daisy tells a beloved and heart-warming story about overcoming prejudices, accepting change and the power of genuine friendship.  Spanning an era of tremendous change in American society, Driving Miss Daisy is an inspiring and unforgettable evening of theatre.  The preview performance takes place Thursday January 29th, with the Gala Opening on Friday January 30th. The play runs until Saturday February 14th.
