THUNDER BAY – CLIMATE – The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a Flood Watch for the Lakehead Region including: City of Thunder Bay, Municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah and the Townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.
Weather Forecast: The Authority advises that 20 to 30 millimetres of precipitation is forecast over the next 24 hours. There is also potential for thunderstorms producing an additional 5 to 10 millimetres of precipitation throughout the region.
Environmental Conditions: There is still significant snowpack in the rural areas, and the ground is not yet thawed. Area watercourses have opened up, and ice jamming has subsided. Waterways are beginning to increase in volume and flow due to runoff from the snowmelt.
Risks: The combined rainfall and snowmelt could cause significant runoff due to the frozen ground. Area watercourses are expected to rise in response to any rainfall and there may be localized flooding in low-lying areas.
ACTION: The public is advised to pay attention to local forecasts, and exercise caution in and around area waterways. High flows and unstable slippery banks could be dangerous. Guardians are advised to keep children and pets away from all waterways and discuss the hazards of cold fast flowing water. Individuals should watch for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts, and should never drive through a flooded road.
A Flood Watch is issued when the assessed conditions indicate that the potential for flooding exists. Authority Staff will continue to monitor conditions as part of its flood forecasting and warning program.
Duration: This message will remain in effect until 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 2026.
