THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority (LRCA) has issued a Flood Watch for the Lakehead Region, including the City of Thunder Bay, and the Municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, along with the Townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies, and Dorion.
Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Possible
The LRCA advises that up to 25 millimetres of precipitation is expected within the next 24 hours, with the potential for thunderstorms bringing an additional 10 to 25 millimetres of rain.
Environmental Conditions: Snowmelt and Frozen Ground Increase Risk
Despite weeks of spring melt, snow remains in parts of the Lakehead watershed and the ground has not fully thawed. As a result, area watercourses are already running high and fast.
The combination of significant rainfall and lingering snowpack could lead to substantial runoff, with watercourses expected to rise and localized flooding possible in low-lying areas.
Public Advisory: Stay Safe Near Waterways
Residents are urged to monitor local weather updates and exercise extreme caution around waterways.
High flows, slippery banks, and cold, fast-moving water pose serious dangers. Parents and caregivers are especially encouraged to keep children and pets well away from rivers, creeks, and streams.
Additionally, the LRCA reminds the public to never attempt to drive through flooded roads.
What a Flood Watch Means
A Flood Watch is issued when conditions indicate the potential for flooding exists.
Authority staff will continue to monitor weather and watershed conditions closely as part of ongoing flood forecasting and warning efforts.
Duration:
This Flood Watch will remain in effect until 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
