Far-North Shuffle: Clouds, Gusts, and Bright Breaks from Sunday to Wednesday

NORTHWEST & FAR NORTHEAST ONTARIO — A classic early-November pattern is humming across the Far North: a blustery Sunday under mostly cloudy skies with passing light showers or flurries, followed by brighter, cooler weather Monday, a pleasantly milder Tuesday, and seasonable chill returning Tuesday night into Wednesday.

This stretch features brisk westerly winds at times, especially Sunday into Monday, and the kind of day-to-night temperature swing that lays down a morning frost even after a mild afternoon.

Great weather to get out and make sure there is lots of meat in the freezer for the coming winter.

Sunday — Breezy and Mostly Cloudy, Spotty Showers or Flurries

From Neskantaga through Sandy Lake and Bearskin Lake west to Big Trout Lake (KI) and Marten Falls, expect a grey, brisk day with a risk of light showers or a few flurries, most likely around midday to late afternoon as winds veer westerly and pick up.

Temperatures will climb into the mid single digits above freezing in the afternoon before slipping close to or just below zero late evening. Along the coast at Attawapiskat and especially Fort Severn (Wasaho), the on-shore breeze off Hudson Bay adds extra bite and can spark brief flurry bursts; roads and boardwalks may turn slick where a shower meets colder ground. Winds ease gradually late evening from west to east.

Monday — Clearing Trend, Still Breezy in the West

Behind the Sunday disturbance, drier air sweeps in. Look for a mix of sun and cloud early, then broader clearing through the afternoon across KI, Sandy Lake, Bearskin Lake, Neskantaga, and Marten Falls. It stays a touch wind-tousled with west to northwest gusts, but markedly brighter. Attawapiskat and Fort Severn keep a few stubborn clouds and the odd flurry streamer off the Bay early, tapering later day. Afternoon highs near the mid single digits; overnight lows slip to around zero or a couple below with widespread frost under clearing skies.

Tuesday — The Pick of the Stretch: Sunny to Partly Sunny, Milder

High pressure settles overhead, delivering a calmer, kinder day. Expect plenty of sun for KI, Sandy Lake, Bearskin Lake, Neskantaga, and Marten Falls, with some high cloud filtering the light at times. Attawapiskat and Fort Severn brighten too, though thin cloud may linger near the coast. Afternoon temperatures nudge a little higher than Monday, many spots reaching 7–10°C inland if you find a sheltered, sunny corner. Winds are lighter overall. Nighttime, however, turns crisp and clear again, dropping several degrees below freezing; frost redevelops widely.

Wednesday — Clouds Edge Back, Seasonable Chill

By mid-week, a weak wave brings back cloud, especially west of Marten Falls through KI and Sandy Lake. Most areas stay dry, but a few flurries or brief sprinkles can’t be ruled out near sunset as cooler air noses in aloft. Temperatures trend back toward seasonable, with afternoon readings in the low to mid single digits and another cold night ahead.

What to Wear and Carry

This run is all about smart layering. Start with a warm base layer and add an insulating mid-layer topped by a wind-resistant shell. A toque and light gloves make windy Sunday and Monday mornings far more comfortable. Waterproof boots with good tread are worthwhile for wet leaves, puddles, or a surprise flurry burst. Sunglasses help with low-angle sun Monday afternoon and Tuesday, and a neck gaiter is a pocket-friendly upgrade when gusts kick up.

Far-North Weather Trivia

Hudson and James Bay can act like giant “cloud factories” in November. When relatively milder, moist air runs over cold coastal land, you get persistent low cloud and flurry streamers — even while inland communities lounge under blue sky. It’s the classic reason a 50-kilometre hop can mean a totally different sky in the Far North.
