THUNDER BAY – A tense armed hostage situation in the city’s north core ended peacefully on Friday, July 4, thanks to a coordinated police response and the work of skilled negotiators.

This event dominated much of Friday. The incident began around 8:30 a.m. when Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) officers responded to a weapons-related call in the 100 block of Cumberland Street North.

It quickly escalated into a full-scale standoff involving a male suspect and a hostage.

The Thunder Bay Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police co-ordinated efforts as the situation continued into the afternoon. The OPP brought in their ERT team members, and mobile command centre.

In the afternoon, the situation as it continued required the TBPS Tactical Unit to be spelled off by OPP ERT team. This after almost six plus hours of very stressful effort and concentration.

By evening, the standoff was resolved without injury. The suspect was taken into custody, and the individual who had been held hostage had safely exited the scene earlier in the day.

Police Chief Commends Professionalism

TBPS Chief Darcy Fleury highlighted the professionalism and bravery of the responding officers and support teams.

“This was a high-risk, high-pressure incident that required absolute professionalism, courage, and collaboration,” said Chief Fleury. “Our members and partners demonstrated the best of what policing should be.”

Multi-Agency Collaboration Key to Resolution

Multiple specialized units from TBPS were involved, including Emergency Task Unit (ETU), Major Crimes, Intelligence, Cyber Crime, CORE, and others. Critical support was also provided by the Ontario Provincial Police’s Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) and Emergency Response Team (ERT).

Chief Fleury emphasized that teamwork and dedication were central to ensuring the safety of the public and the peaceful outcome.

“No matter the risk, no matter the challenge—our teams put the safety of others first. That’s what service truly means,” he stated.

Community Cooperation Appreciated

The TBPS also extended its gratitude to residents and businesses in the area for their patience and cooperation during the prolonged incident.

More details may be released as the investigation continues.
