Two Arrested After Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Discovery in Atikokan

ATIKOKAN, ON – Police arrested two individuals following a proactive traffic stop that uncovered suspected cocaine and other drug-related items earlier this week.

On June 24, 2025, around 1:30 p.m., an officer from the OPP’s Atikokan Detachment initiated a routine traffic stop to verify documentation. During the stop, one passenger was found to be in breach of a court-imposed prohibition, prompting an immediate arrest. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a small quantity of suspected cocaine and paraphernalia commonly used in drug trafficking, resulting in a second arrest.

🚔 Charges Laid

Rodney William BENJAMIN, 40, of Atikokan:

  • Possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition

  • Fail to comply with probation
    He remains in custody and is scheduled for a bail hearing on June 30, 2025, at the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice.

Heather Christine SMITH, 34, of Atikokan:

  • Possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking

  • Possession of unmarked cigarettes
    She has been released, with a first court appearance set for July 31, 2025, at the Atikokan Ontario Court of Justice.
