Wildfire Update

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE REPORTS – The Northeast Fire Region of Ontario remains relatively quiet in terms of new fire activity, with no new wildfires reported as of Friday, June 27. However, fire officials warn that conditions are ripe for escalation, especially in the far northern sector of the region.

As of 6:34 p.m. EDT, there are three active wildfires in the Northeast. Of these, one fire is under control, while two others are being observed. There have been no new fire starts detected today, but dry conditions in the north are raising the threat level.

Current Fire Hazard Overview:

  • High to Extreme Hazard: Reported across the far north of the Northeast Fire Region, where warmer, drier conditions persist.

  • Low to Moderate Hazard: Found in the central and southern areas, including regions from Sudbury to North Bay and the Muskoka district.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to check the Ontario Wildfire Interactive Map for the latest fire hazard conditions specific to their location.

Safety Reminder: No Drone Zone

Flying drones near wildfires is illegal and highly dangerous. Unauthorized drone flights can interfere with aerial firefighting efforts, putting the lives of pilots and ground crews at risk. If you see a drone near a fire – report it.

Outdoor Burning Regulations

The Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) team urges extreme caution when burning outdoors. To reduce wildfire risk:

  • Burn only between two hours before sunset and two hours after sunrise.

  • Always have adequate tools and water on hand.

  • Opt for safer methods like composting or taking yard waste to a landfill.

  • Review and follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations before lighting a fire.

Reporting Wildfires

  • North of French and Mattawa Rivers: Call 310-FIRE (no area code required).

  • South of those regions: Call 911.
