Greenstone OPP Lay Impaired Driving Charges Following Late-Night Traffic Stop

GERALDTON, ON – A routine traffic stop for speeding in Greenstone led to impaired driving charges for a Thunder Bay man on June 9, 2025.

Shortly before 11:00 p.m., officers from the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11, near Michael Power Boulevard, after observing a vehicle travelling well above the posted speed limit.

During the stop, officers observed signs of impairment. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Greenstone OPP Detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Ryan SMITH, 35, of Thunder Bay, has been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Highway Traffic Act with the following offences:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

  • Speeding 1–49 km/h over the posted limit

Smith has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Geraldton on July 3, 2025.

The OPP continues to prioritize road safety across Northwestern Ontario by removing impaired drivers through enforcement and public education.

Anyone who suspects a motorist is impaired by alcohol or drugs is urged to call 911 immediately.
