THUNDER BAY, ON – A 42-year-old man from Wunnumin Lake First Nation is facing multiple criminal charges following an impaired driving investigation on Highway 61 in the early hours of Saturday, May 31, 2025.
At approximately 5:39 a.m., officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint involving a vehicle traveling within the city limits of Thunder Bay. Police located the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.
Through the course of the investigation, officers determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol. The individual was placed under arrest at the scene and transported to the detachment for further testing.
Charges Laid Under the Criminal Code
As a result, Calvin SUGANAQUEB, age 42, of Wunnumin Lake First Nation, has been charged with the following offences:

Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 Plus) under Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada,

Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs under Section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code,

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle under Section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code.
If convicted, these charges carry significant penalties, including mandatory licence suspensions, monetary fines, and possible imprisonment, especially for repeat offences or where public safety is endangered.
Court Appearance Scheduled
Suganaqueb has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay on June 25, 2025.
