Wildfires Near Manitou Lake and Caramat Not Yet Under Control

SAULT STE. MARIE – Wildfire Update – Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) confirms two new wildland fires in Ontario’s Northeast Region as of May 26. North Bay 4 is burning at the north end of Manitou Lake, east of Sturgeon River Provincial Park. Meanwhile, Wawa 1 is located approximately 11 km southeast of Caramat. Both fires are measured at 0.3 hectares and remain not under control.

Fire Hazard Varies Across Region

The general fire hazard across the Northeast remains low to moderate, but communities such as Kirkland Lake and Smooth Rock Falls are currently experiencing high fire risk. Residents can monitor localized conditions using Ontario’s Interactive Fire Hazard Map.

Drones Around Fires Are Illegal and Dangerous

AFFES is reminding the public that flying drones near wildfires is both dangerous and illegal. Unauthorized drone activity can ground firefighting aircraft and put crews at serious risk.

Outdoor Burning Regulations Remain in Effect

With drier conditions expected, the public is urged to use caution during any outdoor burning. Residents are encouraged to compost yard waste or use landfill disposal instead of burning. If burning is necessary, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations strictly: fires may only be lit two hours before sunset and must be extinguished within two hours after sunrise.

How to Report a Wildland Fire

  • North of French and Mattawa Rivers: Call 310-FIRE

  • South of French or Mattawa Rivers: Call 911
