August 17, 2026: thunderstorms and gusty winds are possible in Kenora, Fort Frances, Red Lake, Vermilion Bay, Dryden, Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake

Northwestern Ontario is heading into a changing weather day as a system crosses the region Monday. Kenora, Fort Frances, Red Lake, Vermilion Bay, Dryden and Sioux Lookout all face a 60 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms at some point today, while showers and a thunderstorm risk move into Pickle Lake this afternoon. Gusty winds will accompany the change, followed by cooler temperatures Tuesday and considerably brighter weather for much of the region Wednesday and Thursday.

For people travelling Highway 17, Highway 105, Highway 72 or heading onto area lakes, today is a day to keep an eye on changing skies. Thunderstorms may produce rapidly changing conditions, while stronger northwest winds behind the system will make exposed lakes noticeably rougher.

Wednesday, August 19

Wednesday looks considerably better across most of Northwestern Ontario.

Kenora will be sunny with a high of 22°C, while Fort Frances reaches 23°C under sunny skies. Red Lake and Dryden both reach 21°C with sunshine, and Sioux Lookout will also be sunny with a high of 21°C. Vermilion Bay reaches 21°C under sunny skies. Overnight lows generally fall into the 9°C to 13°C range.

Pickle Lake remains the exception. A mix of sun and cloud comes with a 40 percent chance of showers and a high of 18°C. Wednesday night clears and falls to 8°C.

Thursday, August 20

Thursday continues the improving trend.

Kenora reaches 23°C with a mix of sun and cloud, while Fort Frances climbs to 24°C. Red Lake will be sunny at 23°C. Vermilion Bay, Dryden and Sioux Lookout all reach a warmer 24°C, with sunshine expected through the day.

Pickle Lake also gets into the sunshine Thursday, although temperatures remain a little cooler with a high of 20°C.

Clouds begin returning Thursday night, with a chance of showers developing in several areas.

Wardrobe Recommendations

Monday calls for layers and rain protection. Temperatures will climb into the low to mid-20s across the southern part of the region, so lighter clothing will work during the warmer afternoon hours, but a waterproof jacket should be close at hand given the widespread shower and thunderstorm risk.

For people working outside, boating or travelling between communities, a wind-resistant outer layer will become increasingly useful as winds strengthen and turn northwesterly.

Tuesday will have a much cooler feel, particularly in Red Lake, Sioux Lookout and Pickle Lake. A hoodie, light fleece or windbreaker will be useful, especially in the morning and evening. Overnight temperatures falling to 8°C or 9°C in several communities are a reminder that late-summer nights in Northwestern Ontario can turn chilly quickly.

Fort Frances residents may want sunglasses and lighter clothing during today’s sunny morning, but the rain jacket should not be left behind with thunderstorms possible later this afternoon.

Weather Trivia

August temperatures vary considerably across Northwestern Ontario even over relatively short distances. Environment Canada’s climate normals for this time of year list typical daily maximums around 23°C in Kenora and Fort Frances, about 22°C in Red Lake, Dryden and Sioux Lookout, and approximately 21°C in Pickle Lake.

That helps put Tuesday’s 17°C forecast high in Pickle Lake into perspective: it is roughly four degrees below the community’s normal mid-August daytime maximum.
