Wildfire Update – May 25, 2025 | Northeast Region
Report Time: 5:20 PM EDT
Northeastern Ontario – A welcome reprieve from wildfire activity continues in the Northeast Region, where no new wildland fires were confirmed as of May 25 and no active fires are currently burning. While much of the region enjoys a low fire hazard rating, conditions in the Kirkland Lake area remain moderate, and authorities urge residents to remain cautious.
Drone Safety: Critical Reminder
While the Northeast remains fire-free, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) reminds the public that operating drones near forest fires is strictly prohibited. Even in areas where no fires are currently burning, drone interference during suppression efforts can endanger aerial operations and emergency personnel.
Key Rule: If there’s smoke, keep your drone grounded.
Outdoor Burning Regulations Still Apply
Even during periods of lower fire hazard, safe burning practices are essential:
-
Fires may only be ignited no earlier than two hours before sunset and must be fully extinguished two hours after sunrise.
-
Always keep adequate tools and water on hand to contain any fire.
-
Whenever possible, opt for composting or local landfill disposal of yard waste and woody debris.
