Wintery Mix Makes a Mid-Spring Appearance

GERALDTON – WEATHER – It may be late April, but Geraldton and surrounding Greenstone communities are waking up to winter’s stubborn encore performance. Environment Canada has issued a Winter Weather Travel Advisory for the Geraldton – Longlac – Caramat region, as a low-pressure system moves in with a rather unwelcome delivery of snow — up to 10 cm, with potential for even more in certain pockets.

Snow, Sleet, and Slushy Streets

As of 6:00 AM EDT, the mercury hovered just below freezing at -0.8°C, with a gentle northeast breeze at 5 km/h. The wind chill dips slightly to -2°C, and humidity is at a moist 80%, giving everything that extra damp feel that only spring snow can manage. Barometric pressure sits at 101.7 kPa, signaling that this system means business.

Periods of snow are already beginning and are expected to ramp up as the day progresses. By this afternoon, that snow will start mixing with rain — the meteorological version of a “choose your own adventure,” but neither outcome is very pleasant. The high will creep up to +2°C, but not enough to keep all the white stuff at bay. Winds will pick up to 20 km/h, gusting to 40 km/h, making that slushy mess a bit more horizontal by late morning.

By tonight, snow continues, still flirting with rain early in the evening. Winds stay brisk out of the north at 20 km/h, gusting to 40. The low drops to -1°C, and things are expected to stay chilly under cloudy skies.

Midweek Outlook: A Gradual Thaw (Maybe)

Tuesday brings a 40% chance of lingering flurries in the morning, with skies breaking into a mix of sun and cloud later on. The northeast wind will lighten up by noon, and temperatures will aim for a more pleasant high of 8°C. Clouds stick around overnight with a low of -2°C.

Wednesday and Thursday look a bit milder, although the region won’t quite be out of the woods. Cloudy skies prevail with a 30 to 40% chance of showers or even the odd flurry. Highs remain steady near 8°C with lows hovering near or just above freezing.

Wardrobe Wisdom

Layer up with waterproof gear today — that snow-rain combo is a recipe for soaked socks and regret. A warm, waterproof jacket and sturdy boots will keep you comfortable and dry. Keep gloves handy; that damp northeast wind has a way of finding its way into your sleeves.

Weather Trivia: Did You Know?

Geraldton’s record high for April 21 is a balmy 22.4°C, set in 1987 — a far cry from today’s snowy scene. The record low for this date is a crisp -15.0°C, logged back in 1966. So, while today’s weather may feel a little unseasonal, the area has certainly seen both frostier and far more sun-drenched Aprils!
