Fire Hazard Outlook & Thanksgiving Weekend Safety
Fire hazards are predominantly moderate to high across the Northwest Region, with a low hazard in the northern half of the Greenstone Fire Management Sector. With the Thanksgiving weekend approaching, an elevated fire hazard is expected, especially in the Thunder Bay area.
Safety Tips for the Long Weekend:
- Outdoor Fires: Keep fires small, have water nearby, and fully extinguish before leaving.
- ATV Safety: Avoid sparks by securing chains, keeping machines clean, and avoiding parking on dry grass.
- Hunting Safety: Be aware of FireRangers working in forested areas. Check your surroundings before using firearms.
- Yardwork: Opt for composting or using landfill services for woody debris instead of burning.
Residents are reminded to follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations, including only lighting fires two hours before sunset and extinguishing them two hours after sunrise. Ensure proper tools and water are available for fire control.
