One new fire was confirmed in the Northwest Region by late afternoon on July 22. Sioux Lookout 12, near Eyapamikama Lake and approximately 36 kilometers east of Weagamow First Nation, is being observed at 3.0 hectares in size.

As of this update, there are six active fires in the Northwest Region at various stages of control. One fire is being held, one is under control, and four are being observed. Two fires have been called out in the past 24 hours.

Fires of Note

  • Red Lake 5 (RED005): Located approximately 6.8 kilometers west of Deer Lake First Nation on the south side of the lake. This 6.4-hectare fire is under control.
  • Red Lake 6 (RED006): Located approximately 10.3 kilometers southwest of Deer Lake First Nation and 3.0 kilometers southwest of McIntosh Bay. This 2.9-hectare fire is being held.

Both fires responded well to aerial suppression by a waterbomber on July 20. FireRanger crews have made progress encircling the fires’ perimeters with hoselines and are working to extinguish hotspots.

The wildland fire hazard is mainly low throughout the Kenora, Fort Frances, and Dryden fire management sectors. Thunder Bay, Red Lake, and Nipigon sectors have mainly moderate to low fire hazard conditions with isolated pockets of high hazard.

Help Fight Forest Fires: Stay Clear of Waterbombers!

When waterbombers approach a body of water, move close to the shore to allow them to scoop safely. A waterbomber will not scoop from a lake or river if encroaching watercraft pose a safety hazard. Be safe, and stay clear of waterbombers.
