THUNDER BAY – NEWS – The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA) supports the Government of Canada standing up for Canadian industries, businesses, workers, and communities in response to the latest U.S. tariffs.
NOMA recognizes the federal government’s efforts to defend Canada’s economic interests and competitiveness and to stand up for Canadian industries, businesses, workers, and communities. Northwestern Ontario’s forestry, mining, manufacturing, transportation, and resource sectors are particularly exposed to trade uncertainty, and protecting the people and communities that depend on these sectors must remain a priority.
NOMA recognizes the leadership of Prime Minister Mark Carney, Minister Dominic LeBlanc, and Canada’s trade negotiating team as they continue to defend Canada’s interests. While we remain hopeful that a fair agreement can be reached, NOMA believes that no deal is better than a bad deal that compromises Canada’s economic interests, sovereignty, or long-term competitiveness.
The federal government already has a number of tariff relief and support measures in place. NOMA encourages the Government of Canada to ensure these measures are applied quickly and effectively to industries and businesses impacted by the latest tariffs, providing relief where it is needed most.
In times of uncertainty, Canadians have always come together. This moment is no different. NOMA encourages residents, municipalities, and businesses across Northwestern Ontario to continue supporting our local economies and the Canadian businesses and workers who will be impacted by these tariffs. Supporting local businesses, buying Canadian products, and investing in Canadian companies are important ways we can stand together and strengthen our economy.
NOMA will continue working closely with the federal and provincial governments in the days and weeks ahead to advocate for Northwestern Ontario and ensure the unique needs of our industries, workers, businesses, and communities remain front and centre.
