Thunder Bay Police Service says a Traffic Unit officer was patrolling Golf Links Road shortly after 11 a.m. when a vehicle was observed travelling significantly above the posted speed limit and weaving through other traffic.

The officer stopped the vehicle, observed signs of impairment and conducted a standardized field sobriety test. The driver was arrested and taken into custody.

Police say a drug recognition expert conducted a further assessment and determined the woman was impaired.

She is charged with:

The woman was released with a future court date. Her name and court date were not provided. The charges have not been proven in court, and she is presumed innocent.

Under the Criminal Code, impaired operation includes driving while alcohol, drugs or both affect a person’s ability to drive to any degree. Dangerous operation concerns driving that is dangerous to the public, considering all the circumstances.

Either offence carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if prosecuted by indictment. If prosecuted by summary conviction, the maximum is two years less a day in jail, a $5,000 fine, or both.

A first conviction for drug-impaired driving generally carries a minimum $1,000 fine and a driving prohibition of at least one year. Any sentence would depend on the facts of the case and the offender’s record.

Thunder Bay Police urge anyone who suspects a driver is impaired by alcohol or drugs to call 911.
