KENORA – WEATHER – Kenora and the Lake of the Woods region are ending Sunday on a mild note, but don’t let the 7°C reading fool you. A Special Weather Statement is in effect for Kenora–Grassy Narrows–Whitedog, with Environment Canada warning that snow will begin Monday afternoon and continue into Tuesday evening.

Total snowfall near 10 cm is possible, and heavier bursts could reduce visibility at times.

It sure seems that March is headed out roaring like a lion.

Today’s Weather Overview

Current Conditions

At 5:00 PM CDT, conditions at Kenora Airport were mostly cloudy with a temperature of 7.0°C. The pressure was 101.4 kPa and falling, humidity sat at 33 percent, and a west-northwest wind was blowing at 10 km/h. Visibility was a wide-open 32 kilometres, giving the region a quiet late-day look before the weather turns much more unsettled.

That mild air is temporary. Environment Canada says tonight will turn partly cloudy with a low of -8°C and an overnight wind chill near -11, setting the stage for a colder and more wintry start to the workweek.

Tomorrow’s Forecast

Expected Conditions

Monday, March 30 will turn mainly cloudy, with a 40 percent chance of flurries in the afternoon. Winds will shift easterly to 20 km/h during the morning, and the temperature will struggle to a high of -1°C. It will feel colder than that, with wind chills near -15 in the morning and around -7 in the afternoon.

Monday night is when the storm begins to organize. Environment Canada calls for cloudy skies, a brief flurry risk early in the evening, and then periods of snow developing in the evening. About 5 cm is forecast Monday night alone, with a low of -7°C and wind chill values near -11.

Tuesday, March 31 looks like the most disruptive part of the stretch. Periods of snow are expected through the day with a high of -1°C, and the broader Special Weather Statement says total snowfall near 10 cm is possible from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening. Forecasters add that there is still considerable uncertainty in the exact track of the Colorado Low, so the heaviest band of snow could still shift. Tuesday night stays cold, with cloudy periods, a 40 percent chance of flurries, and a low of -13°C.

Wednesday, April 1 offers a cleaner break. Sunshine returns with a high of 3°C, followed by increasing cloudiness overnight and a low of -5°C. Thursday brings a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 4°C, while Friday stays cloudy with a high of 4°C before another 60 percent chance of snow moves in Friday night.

Wardrobe Recommendations

Tonight calls for a winter coat again, even after the mild afternoon, because temperatures fall quickly below freezing. For Monday through Tuesday, this is full winter clothing weather: insulated jacket, gloves, hat, boots with good grip, and layers that can handle changing wind chill. Drivers around Kenora and Lake of the Woods should be ready for slippery highways, snow-covered secondary roads, and messy walking conditions as untreated surfaces turn icy.

Weather Trivia

For late March in Kenora, Environment Canada lists normal temperatures around 4°C for the daytime high and -6°C for the overnight low. That means this incoming shot of snow and cold is not unusual for the season, even if Sunday’s 7°C afternoon briefly made it feel like spring had finally settled in.
