City cites supply chain delays as final materials and exterior work push timeline back
THUNDER BAY — Local News — The City of Thunder Bay says the new Waterfront Transit Terminal is now expected to open mid- to late April, with the timeline extended due to outstanding materials and ongoing supply chain challenges.
City officials say the project has made substantial progress, with much of the interior work nearing completion. However, some exterior elements and finishing materials have not yet arrived, and additional time will be needed once deliveries are received to complete installation and conduct final inspections before the terminal can safely open to the public.
City apologizes to riders, says focus remains on safety and quality
“We acknowledge that this project has taken longer than anticipated, and we recognize the impact this has had on transit riders,” said Bobbi Tait, Supervisor – Capital Facility Construction. “We sincerely apologize for the continued delays and appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by the public. Our focus remains on completing the terminal safely and to a high standard so it can serve the community well for years to come.”
Temporary transit operations to continue through completion
The City says it will continue to maintain safe and accessible temporary transit operations at the site while construction wraps up. That includes ongoing snow clearing, shelter maintenance, and general site upkeep to support riders until the new terminal opens.
The new temporary “shelter” has been the target of riders as it offers little shelter from the elements.
City staff say more information will be shared as the opening date approaches, with the completed facility still expected to welcome the public this spring.
