A New Chapter for a Beloved Institution
THUNDER BAY — One of Thunder Bay’s most iconic culinary landmarks is embarking on a bold new chapter. The Hoito Restaurant is set to open its second location at the vibrant Goods & Co. Market in the coming weeks.
Known for its deeply rooted Finnish heritage and rich community ties, this expansion brings with it new opportunities to serve more of Thunder Bay with the traditional flavours and warmth locals have come to love.
The new location will feature an expanded kitchen, which means a chance to broaden the menu—introducing not only the nostalgic favourites but also new dishes that fuse tradition with innovation, designed to excite both long-time fans and new patrons.
Expanded Menu Offers Classic and Contemporary Finnish Fare
With more room to cook and create, the Goods & Co. kitchen will allow Hoito’s culinary team to go beyond the classics. While Finnish staples like mojakka, karjalanpiirakka, and their famous Finnish pancakes will remain at the heart of the menu, diners can also expect exciting new additions and seasonal specials that push boundaries while paying homage to Finnish roots.
“The Hoito has always been more than just a restaurant—it’s a reflection of our cultural fabric,” said a spokesperson for the team. “With this expansion, we’re staying true to that spirit while also exploring new ways to celebrate food and community.”
The Hoito’s Storied Past: A Thunder Bay Treasure Since 1918
Originally opened in 1918 in the basement of the Finnish Labour Temple, the Hoito was founded by Finnish bushworkers and labourers who believed in cooperative ownership and affordable, hearty meals. Its name, which means “care” in Finnish, speaks volumes about its founding principles and continued mission.
The Hoito quickly became a social and cultural hub for Finnish-Canadians in Northwestern Ontario, serving traditional meals in a communal setting. Its famous long wooden tables, hearty stews, and endless stacks of Finnish pancakes turned the Hoito into a must-visit landmark—not just for locals but for visitors from across Canada and around the world.

The restaurant faced a significant setback in 2021 when a fire severely damaged the Finnish Labour Temple.
Despite announced plans to rebuiid, the site remains empty.

But thanks to overwhelming community support, the Hoito re-emerged as a market pop-up and now continues its legacy with this new permanent location.
