Whelan Creek fire prompts overnight evacuations, residents on alert near Kelowna airport

KELOWNA – NATIONAL NEWS: Authorities in British Columbia have issued an evacuation order for multiple homes in the Ellison area of Kelowna as the Whelan Creek wildfire continues to burn near the city’s international airport.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan has ordered residents at seven addresses on Rockface Road and Dead Pine Drive to evacuate immediately. Officials advise that residents should expect to be away from their homes overnight, as fire crews work to contain the blaze.

An additional evacuation alert has been issued for 106 other addresses, urging residents to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice. The fire is burning east of Kelowna International Airport, raising concerns about local infrastructure and air quality.

RCMP and Fire Crews Respond Swiftly

The RCMP began tactical evacuations Sunday afternoon as the wildfire intensified, impacting residential zones. According to the BC Wildfire Service, the Whelan Creek fire has grown to 4.31 hectares, but it is currently classified as “being held”, meaning it is not expected to spread under current conditions.

Firefighters and emergency personnel remain on scene, working through challenging terrain and dry summer conditions that have become increasingly common during wildfire season in British Columbia.

Broader Implications and Seasonal Trends

This evacuation comes as Western Canada continues to face heightened wildfire risks, driven by prolonged dry weather and rising summer temperatures. The situation is a reminder to residents across Northwestern Ontario, including Thunder Bay, of the importance of emergency preparedness, particularly in rural and wooded areas.

Thunder Bay and other parts of Northern Ontario have faced their own wildfire threats in recent years, and Kelowna’s situation underscores the need for rapid response planning and up-to-date emergency alerts.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates via regional emergency services and wildfire information portals.
