Thunder Bay Fire Rescue extinguishes late-morning fire on North May Street

THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews quickly extinguished a late-morning fire on North May Street after multiple reports of smoke coming from the rear of a home.
The fire was brought under control before it caused major damage to the residence.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding residents to properly dispose of cigarette waste, which can create a serious fire risk when discarded near decks, dry materials or exterior structures.

Second alarm called after smoke confirmed

The officer on the first arriving pumper confirmed smoke at the scene and requested a second alarm. That added two pumpers and an aerial ladder to the initial response, which included four pumpers and a command unit.

Firefighters found smoke and fire at the back of the home, where a deck was heavily involved. Crews quickly knocked down the fire using a 45-mm attack line.

Search confirms no one inside home

A second crew completed a primary search of all floors of the 2 1/2-storey building and confirmed no one was inside.

The home sustained only minor heat damage.

Fire officials urge care with cigarette disposal

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding residents that cigarette waste should be fully extinguished and disposed of safely in a proper container.

Discarded smoking materials can smoulder before igniting nearby combustibles, especially around decks, planters, porches and garbage containers.

There were no injuries reported in the information released by fire officials.
