A messy late-week system is set to hit Northwestern Ontario in stages. For Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, and Sioux Lookout, the main concern is freezing rain and mixed precipitation from Thursday evening into Friday afternoon, followed by a hard drop in temperature Friday night and a colder, breezy Saturday with flurries. Fort Frances stays on the warmer side a little longer, but it will still turn colder enough for snow or ice pellets by Friday night.
Alerts and warnings
As of late Thursday, Environment Canada had Yellow Freezing Rain Warnings in effect for the forecast regions covering Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, and Sioux Lookout. The warning calls for 2 to 4 mm of ice build-up from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon, with slippery roads and walkways and the possibility of localized utility outages. Fort Frances – Emo – Rainy River had no alerts in effect.
Friday, April 17
Kenora: Friday looks wintry and difficult, with snow or freezing rain mixed with ice pellets, a high near -1°C, and northwest winds gusting to 40 km/h by late morning. Travel conditions may stay slick through the day, and Friday night drops to -11°C with a 60 percent chance of flurries and a risk of freezing drizzle.
Dryden: Dryden is in for one of the rougher Friday forecasts in the region. Environment Canada calls for periods of freezing rain or a few rain showers changing to rain in the afternoon, a risk of thunderstorm, and 10 to 15 mm of rainfall, with a high around +1°C. By Friday night, rain mixes with snow, then gives way to flurries and a renewed risk of freezing drizzle, with the temperature falling to -11°C.
Ignace: Ignace starts on the milder side Friday, but it is still under a freezing rain warning. The forecast calls for periods of freezing rain or a few rain showers changing to rain in the afternoon, a risk of thunderstorm, and 10 to 15 mm of rainfall, with a much warmer high near 13°C. That warmth does not last: Friday night turns sharply colder, with rain mixed with snow, a risk of freezing drizzle, and a low near -9°C.
Sioux Lookout: Sioux Lookout also faces a difficult Friday. Snow mixed with freezing rain and ice pellets is expected to shift to rain or freezing rain in the afternoon, with a high near +1°C. Friday night stays unsettled, with rain or freezing rain ending in the evening, then a 60 percent chance of flurries, a risk of freezing drizzle, and a low near -10°C.
Fort Frances: Fort Frances avoids the freezing rain warning, but Friday will still be active. Expect cloudy skies, a 40 percent chance of showers in the morning and early afternoon, then periods of rain in the afternoon with a risk of a late-day thunderstorm. The high reaches about 7°C, but Friday night turns colder with snow or ice pellets, then flurries, and a low near -9°C.
Saturday, April 18
Saturday is the colder, blustery backside of this system across the region. Kenora reaches only -2°C with a mix of sun and cloud and a 40 percent chance of flurries. Dryden also tops out near -2°C with cloudy skies and a 40 percent chance of flurries. Ignace stays cloudy with a 40 percent chance of flurries and a high near -2°C. Sioux Lookout is colder still, with a high near -4°C and a 60 percent chance of flurries. Fort Frances is a touch milder at 0°C, but still cloudy with a 40 percent chance of flurries.
Wardrobe recommendations
For Friday, waterproof outerwear is not enough in the warning areas. In Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, and Sioux Lookout, treat it like an ice event: insulated boots with grip, a warm coat, gloves, and extra caution if you are driving or walking. In Fort Frances, rain gear works during the day, but winter layers return fast Friday night and remain useful through Saturday as temperatures fall below freezing across the region.
Weather trivia
A classic Northwestern Ontario spring swing is built into this forecast. Environment Canada’s posted normals for mid-April are only around 10°C to 11°C for daytime highs in places like Kenora, Fort Frances, and Sioux Lookout, with overnight normals still below freezing, which helps explain how this region can flip from rain and even thunder to ice pellets, freezing rain, and flurries in less than a day.
The Last Word: Northwestern Ontario weather forecast for Kenora, Dryden, Ignace, Sioux Lookout, and Fort Frances for April 17-18, 2026. Freezing rain warnings cover four communities, with icy travel, mixed precipitation, and a colder, flurry-filled Saturday ahead.
