THUNDER BAY – WEATHER –  Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews were called to an early morning fire on the city’s southside Wednesday, with emergency responders confirming the blaze was in the 600 block of Simpson Street at Hardisty Street. The fire is significant locally because it affected a busy southside corridor and prompted officials to ask the public to avoid the area until further notice.

Crews called just after 3 a.m

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said the fire was burning in the area of Simpson Street and Hardisty Street on the city’s southside.

Officials described the incident as a defensive fire, meaning conditions at the scene did not allow firefighters to safely enter the building when crews arrived.

Public asked to stay clear of the area

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is asking residents and motorists to avoid the area until further notice as crews continue to work at the scene.

Road access and nearby traffic may be affected while firefighters remain on site.

Safety remains the priority

A defensive fire response is used when fire conditions or structural concerns make an interior attack too dangerous for crews.

No further details were immediately released about the extent of the damage, possible injuries or the cause of the fire. Developing news and we will update as more details are released.
