Wildfire Update

Sault Ste. Marie – WILDFIRE UPDATE – MAY 17, 2025 – 18:00 EDT – It was a quiet day on the wildfire front across Ontario’s Northeast Fire Region, as no new wildland fires were confirmed by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES).

There are currently two active wildland fires in the region. Both are under control, and fire suppression crews continue to monitor and patrol the areas.

Fire Hazard Conditions: Low to Moderate

As of this report, the wildland fire hazard remains predominantly low to moderate throughout the Northeast. Cooler temperatures and seasonal moisture are helping to maintain these conditions.

Safety Reminder: No Drone Zone

AFFES is reminding the public that flying drones near wildfires is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous. Unauthorized drone flights jeopardize the safety of aircraft and crews working on the fire lines, and can delay critical firefighting operations.

Be safe. Stay clear. Keep drones grounded near wildfires.

Outdoor Burning Regulations Still in Effect

AFFES continues to urge residents across the Northeast to exercise caution when conducting any outdoor burning.

If you need to dispose of woody debris or yard waste, consider composting or using your local landfill as a first option.

If burning is necessary:

  • Fires must be lit no sooner than 2 hours before sunset

  • Fires must be fully extinguished no later than 2 hours after sunrise

  • Always have adequate tools and water on hand to contain your fire

  • Never leave a fire unattended
