Public reminded of dangers near fast-moving waterways during spring runoff
THUNDER BAY – Local News – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded swiftly to an emergency call reporting two individuals struggling to stay afloat in the Neebing River this afternoon.
Upon arrival, firefighters immediately launched a water rescue operation, deploying four firefighters equipped with specialized water rescue gear and a Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC) to reach the individuals in distress.
Both individuals were successfully brought to shore and transferred to the care of Superior North EMS paramedics, who transported them to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further assessment and treatment.
Water Safety Reminder
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding residents to exercise extreme caution around rivers, streams, and other waterways, especially during periods of high flow and spring runoff, when water levels and currents can be dangerously unpredictable.
“These situations can change rapidly and pose serious risks, even to strong swimmers,” the department stated.
Residents are urged to stay back from fast-moving water, keep pets on leashes near rivers, and always supervise children near waterways.
