NIPIGON, ON – May 6, 2025 – The Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has officially launched the CAMSafe program, a community-driven initiative designed to help police locate potential security camera footage faster during investigations.

The goal? Faster investigations. Safer neighbourhoods. Stronger partnerships.

What is CAMSafe?

CAMSafe is a voluntary, community-based registry of residential and commercial security cameras. When a crime occurs, OPP officers can use the CAMSafe map to identify locations of registered cameras near a crime scene.

Important to note:
🔒 Police cannot access your cameras or footage remotely.
📞 If footage may help an investigation, officers will contact the property owner directly using the CAMSafe-provided contact info.
Only you can view or update your account information.

How to Register

Signing up takes just a few minutes. Participants provide:

  • Basic contact information

  • Camera location (address)

  • Optional details like camera direction, footage retention time, or a sample screenshot

You can update or delete your registration at any time.

Why It Matters

By building a registry of community security cameras, CAMSafe helps reduce the time officers spend canvassing neighbourhoods for surveillance footage. This can make the difference in solving crimes quickly—especially in incidents where every minute counts.

“CAMSafe is a valuable investigative tool that strengthens community safety without compromising privacy,” said Nipigon OPP in a release. “We encourage both residents and businesses to consider signing up.”
