Today’s Forecast: A Bright Start Before the Clouds March In

SAULT STE. MARIE – WEATHER – Good morning Sault Ste. Marie and St. Joseph Island! As of 6:00 AM EDT, it’s a cool and partly cloudy start at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport with a temperature of 5.7°C. The dew point is a crisp -0.1°C, and humidity is sitting at a comfortable 66%. Winds are coming in from the east at 10 km/h, with visibility excellent at 32 km — a beautiful, brisk morning. The barometric pressure reads 102.1 kPa and is falling, signalling that the fair weather is on a bit of a ticking clock.

Today will be a classic “two-seasons-in-one” type of day. The morning promises plenty of sunshine, but by early afternoon, clouds will start to roll in. Winds will pick up too, becoming southeast at 30 km/h and gusting up to 50 km/h late this morning. Despite the shifting skies, temperatures will climb nicely to a high of 18°C — a perfect day for a walk by the waterfront before the weather changes. The UV index is high at 7, so make sure to slap on that sunscreen if you’re heading outdoors.

Historically, Sault Ste. Marie has seen some weather drama on April 28th — the record high was a lovely 26.4°C, and the record low dipped to a chilling -8.5°C. Today’s weather sits comfortably closer to the warm end of that spectrum, at least for now.

Tonight: Showers, Thunder, and Potential Flooding

A Special Weather Statement is in effect as a low-pressure system sweeps in tonight. Cloudy skies will deepen with a 40% chance of showers this evening and after midnight. Expect showers, at times heavy, to begin after midnight. There’s also a risk of thunderstorms both this evening and overnight. Local rainfall amounts could reach 20 to 30 mm, and with the ground still frozen in spots, localized flooding is a real possibility. Winds will stay strong out of the southeast at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h, and the overnight low will be a relatively warm 11°C.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Wet, Wild, then Wonderful

Tuesday, April 29th, continues the rain drama with showers at times heavy early, and a risk of thunderstorms in the morning. Another 10 to 15 mm of rain could fall before things start to settle late in the afternoon. Winds will be from the south at 30 km/h, but by afternoon they’ll swing northwest and strengthen to a gusty 40 km/h, with gusts up to 60 km/h. The temperature will start at 15°C but will fall to just 3°C by late afternoon — a serious jacket kind of day. The UV index will be a modest 3.

Tuesday night will see clearing skies, but temperatures will plummet to -3°C. Pack away the umbrella and dig out the warm jackets yet again!

Wednesday, April 30th, looks much more pleasant with plenty of sunshine and a high near 11°C. Clear skies will persist into the night with a low of +2°C — a calm end to the midweek chaos.

What to Wear?

Today: Light, breathable layers with a sweater handy as winds pick up. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen! Tonight and tomorrow: waterproof everything, plus some warm layers for when the temperatures crash late Tuesday.
