Today’s Forecast: Wet and Wild Weather Incoming
GERALDTON – WEATHER – Good morning to Geraldton, Greenstone, and surrounding communities! As of 6:00 AM EDT at Geraldton Airport, we’re starting off under cloudy skies with a temperature of 7.1°C. The dew point is sitting at a brisk -0.6°C, and humidity is at a moderate 58%. Winds are moving gently from the south at 8 km/h, and visibility stretches a solid 16 km — for now!
The barometric pressure reads 101.4 kPa and is falling steadily, warning us that a major weather change is coming.
A Rainfall Warning is now in effect, and today’s story is all about the incoming deluge. Rain, at times heavy, will begin this afternoon, with 5 mm expected initially. The temperature will hover around 9°C, but don’t let the mild start fool you. Winds will also pick up, becoming southerly at 20 km/h as the rain intensifies. The UV index will reach a moderate 4, meaning a brief glimpse of sun is possible before the clouds fully lock things down.
Historically speaking, April 28th has given Geraldton its fair share of weather drama: the record high was a comfortable 22.7°C, while the record low shivered down to -11.5°C. Today finds us balancing precariously in between… before winter makes a very unwelcome cameo!
Tonight: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms, and a Frosty Turn
Tonight, the weather shifts gears dramatically. Heavy rain will continue and is expected to change to a messy mix of snow and ice pellets before morning. Rainfall amounts could hit between 30 and 40 mm, with thunderstorms also possible this evening. Adding to the excitement (or horror, depending on your spring patience), there is a Special Weather Statement for potential freezing rain overnight.
Winds will swing from south to north late this evening, ramping up to 40 km/h gusting to 60 after midnight. Temperatures will nosedive to -7°C, setting the stage for very icy and slippery conditions by early Tuesday morning.
Tuesday and Wednesday: Winter Bites Back, Then Spring Returns
Tuesday, April 29th, will start with snow and ice pellets, potentially leaving up to 2 cm on the ground. There’s a risk of lingering freezing rain early on, making roads and sidewalks treacherous. The snow should clear near noon, but don’t expect it to warm up much: the high will struggle to reach 0°C. Morning wind chills will make it feel like a brutal -14°C, improving only slightly to -6°C by the afternoon. Winds will remain strong from the north at 40 km/h, gradually easing as the day wears on. The UV index will be a low 2.
Tuesday night will clear out nicely, but temperatures will plummet to a frosty -8°C.
Wednesday, April 30th, brings back the sunshine with a much more forgiving high of 11°C. A few clouds and a 30% chance of showers will roll in by nightfall, with temperatures staying around 0°C overnight.
What to Wear?
Today: waterproof everything, including a sturdy jacket and boots for heavy rain. Tonight and Tuesday: prepare for true winter survival mode — winter coats, gloves, boots, and plenty of caution for those icy surfaces. By Wednesday, spring gear returns to the stage.
Geraldton and Greenstone Weather Trivia
Did you know? Geraldton’s name was chosen in the 1930s after a local mining boom — but today, you might think it’s mining for snow and ice again instead of gold!
