Northwest Region Forest Fire Situation Update

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE – April 1 marks the official start of the 2025 wildfire season across Ontario, including the Northwest Fire Region. As of this afternoon, there are no active wildland fires reported in the region, but provincial authorities are urging residents to exercise caution as the season begins.

With the looming winter storm warning, and the potential for up to 30 cm of snow, that fire hazard right now is low.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) has resumed its regular fire monitoring and will publish situation updates twice weekly—every Monday and Thursday—throughout the season. The next update is scheduled for Thursday, April 3.

Outdoor Burning Regulations Now in Force

With the fire season now underway, Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations are officially in effect. Residents are reminded to avoid unnecessary outdoor burning, especially when other options such as composting or using municipal landfill sites are available for yard waste disposal.

If burning is necessary, residents must follow key safety guidelines:

  • Fires can only be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset.

  • All fires must be fully extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise.

  • Adequate tools and water must be on hand to contain the fire at the site.

For a full list of rules and safe practices, consult Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.

No Fires in Region, But Stay Alert

While no wildfires are currently active in the Northwest, dry conditions can develop quickly in spring. The public’s cooperation is crucial in preventing human-caused wildfires, which are common early in the season.

How to Report a Wildland Fire

  • If you’re north of the French and Mattawa Rivers, call 310-FIRE (3473) to report a wildfire.

  • If you’re south of those rivers, dial 9-1-1 immediately.
