Ontario and Other Provinces Recall Cucumbers Due to Potential Salmonella Risk

THUNDER BAY – CONSUMER NEWS – SunFed Produce, LLC, a U.S. company, has recalled cucumbers sold in Ontario and other Canadian provinces due to potential contamination with Salmonella. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers to check their refrigerators for the recalled product.

Recalled Products:

The recall affects whole, fresh American cucumbers sold in bulk cardboard containers labeled “SunFed” or in black plastic crates with stickers marked “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.” These cucumbers were distributed in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

Reason for Recall:

The recall was initiated after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked these cucumbers to cases of salmonellosis reported between October 12th and November 15th, 2024.

Salmonella Risks:

Salmonella is a bacteria that can cause serious illness, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonellosis include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

What to Do:

  • Check your refrigerator: If you have purchased cucumbers matching the description, do not consume them.
  • Discard or Return: Dispose of the cucumbers immediately or return them to the store where you purchased them.

CFIA Investigation:

The CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation and working with SunFed Produce to ensure the recalled cucumbers are removed from the marketplace. SunFed has confirmed that no other products or farms associated with the company are affected by this recall.

Consumer Safety:

If you suspect you have become ill from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider.
