Thunder Bay – NEWS – A fire broke out in an apartment building on West Amelia Street Friday evening, prompting a swift response from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue.

Just after 8:30 PM, multiple 911 calls reported smoke visible on the 5th floor of the apartment complex. Fire crews arrived quickly, encountering smoke on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors.

The first arriving firefighters ensured residents below the fire floor evacuated safely and those on or above the fire floor sheltered in place.

Then firefighters contained the blaze to a single apartment unit. One occupant of an adjacent unit was assessed by paramedics as a precaution. Thankfully, no one was home in the unit where the fire originated, and no injuries were reported.

The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents with temporary accommodation while restoration work is underway in the building.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of their homes and outside all sleeping areas.
