No injuries were reported after a cooking-related apartment fire and a detached sauna fire on Monday evening

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews responded to two structure fires on Monday, November 2, containing a cooking-related fire at a Rupert Street apartment building and bringing a detached sauna fire on Highway 61 under control.

No civilians or firefighters were injured in either incident.

The first call came at approximately 6 p.m., when a caller reported alarms ringing and a burning odour coming from a main-floor apartment on Rupert Street.

The first arriving pumper crew found light smoke coming from the main floor. The captain identified the incident as cooking-related and advised the other responding crews.

Firefighters quickly controlled the fire, preventing major damage to the building’s interior, according to TBFR. The apartment’s occupants were not present, and all other tenants had evacuated before fire crews arrived.

The second call came at approximately 8:15 p.m., following reports of a house fire with visible flames at a Highway 61 residence. With fire confirmed, the platoon chief upgraded the call to a second-alarm response.

The officer on the first arriving pumper determined that the fire involved a sauna that was separate from the residence. Crews quickly brought the fire under control, but the sauna sustained significant damage.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is reminding residents to exercise caution while cooking. Never leave cooking unattended. When finished, turn off all stove elements and keep heating surfaces clear of items that could catch fire.
