DULUTH – Gale Force winds have been hammering Duluth Minnesota for much of the day. The strong waves at Canal Park have caused the park and area to close for the day.

The City of Duluth will hold an emergency briefing on the situation later this afternoon.

Road Closures

Currently, due to standing water in the Canal Park business district, the City is temporarily closing Canal Park Drive by Morse Street and the Lighthouse parking lot by the maritime museum until further notice.

Harbor Drive behind the DECC is not accessible.

Brighton beach is also temporarily closed at this time. The Lakewalk Trail behind the Canal Park hotels may be partially inaccessible due to debris, please use caution.

City crews are monitoring low lying areas and the storm sewer system. Crews are responding to downed trees in Canal Park.

Standing water at the end of Park Point is being monitored so public access to that area is prohibited. City staff are working hard to ensure safe public access to these and other impacted areas.

As a safety precaution, the City does not advise the public to venture down to the lakeshore or into the closed areas.

Several live webcams are set up around the City for safe online viewing.
