Fort Severn Shooting Incident Under Investigation

FORT SEVERN – On August 2, 2016, at approximately 2:30AM EDT, a lone officer posted at the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) Fort Severn Detachment reported shots fired in the vicinity of the Fort Severn Hotel, where the officer resides.

A combined response of NAPS and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Emergency Response have been deployed and are at the scene, the local officer was assisted to safety. The NAPS North West Crime Unit is also at the scene.

Fort Severn First Nation community members are requested to be vigilant, remain indoors and call police with any information about this incident.

This matter is still under investigation. Updates will be made once they become available.

Sources tell NetNewsLedger that the officer was at one point under protection from the community Elders and members of Council.

Fort Severn First Nation is located approximately 850 km north of Thunder Bay near the shore of Hudson’s Bay.
