NIPIGON – Patty Hajdu, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Superior North, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, has announced an investment of $947,887 in support of community economic and tourism development in the Township of Nipigon.
“We would like to thank the Government of Canada for supporting our diversification efforts that will stimulate business investment and growth, and build on tourism opportunities linked to the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation travel corridor,” said Richard Harvey, Mayor, Township of Nipigon.
The FedNor contribution will enable the township to implement the first phase of its waterfront development plan aimed at capturing a greater percentage of visitors travelling through the region in the summer months. Specifically, the funding will be used to design and build an observation tower and lookout area, as well as a boardwalk and an outdoor events park.
- The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Programs, which support projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
- The Township of Nipigon has a population of approximately 1600, and is located on the edge of the Nipigon River and near the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Nipigon. It is served by Highway 17 as part of the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 11 from the north.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to work with communities, such as Nipigon, to help them capitalize on their tourism potential. By investing in community infrastructure, we are providing communities with the tools they need to bring in more visitors, resulting in increased business for the region’s retail and hospitality sectors,” concluded The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.
