THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Men’s basketball head coach Manny Furtado has formally announced his coaching staff for the 2014-15 season. Working the sidelines with Coach Furtado this season will be Jeremy Weilenga, Pat Charlebois, and Steve McGilligan.

Charlebois has been an assistant with the men’s program since 2010, and has worked as a coach with the Blaze Youth Basketball program since 2005.

Jeremy Wielenga has made the shift to Lakehead from Ontario’s friendly neighbor to the west, where he served as an assistant with the Brandon Bobcats for 4 seasons. Prior to that Jeremy coached at various provincial and high school levels in Brandon.

Steve McGilligan worked in coaching and administrative roles in Auckland, NZ, for the Auckland Pirates of the New Zealand Basketball league. McGilligan has also worked with various CIS programs, including Manitoba, UBC, and Dalhousie since the mid-90’s.

Notable departures from the Lakehead coaching staff include those of Matthew Erdman and Mark English.

Erdman, who played at Lakehead 4 years followed by 10 years as an assistant, was interim head coach during the 2013-14 campaign. Erdman’s decision to resign came in light of new responsibilities as an educator with the Catholic School Board.

“I’d like to sincerely thank Matthew for all of his years of service and dedication to the men’s basketball program here at Lakehead,” says Athletics Director Tom Warden. “He’s leaving the program in better shape than how he found it 15 years ago as a student athlete. I’d like to acknowledge his skills and expertise on the basketball sidelines, and his contribution to Lakehead’s recruiting efforts over the years.”

English (as of late August) has accepted the head coaching position with the women’s basketball program at UPEI. He served as an assistant at Lakehead for 3 years.
