Red River Road Blocked Off – Gas Leak

THUNDER BAY – Breaking – Update: 15:00EDT – The gas leak which caused the evacuation of a number of homes and businesses in Thunder Bay’s north side has been contained. Crews are working to repair the leak, and should be done in a few hours.

Thunder Bay Police now advise that people can return to their residences.  Traffic will still be disrupted at the intersection of Red River Road and Rupert Street for several hours as crews make repairs to the gas line.

Earlier reports:

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is on the scene with vehicles on Red River Road. The street is blocked off right now 10:00AM from Pine Street to Winnipeg Ave. 

Update: 12:35EDT Thunder Bay Fire Rescue advises that the Hillcrest Centre of Change has now been evacuated. All staff and businesses in the Centre have been closed.

There is a Thunder Bay Transit Bus located at Bay and Rupert Street standing by for possible additional evacuations.

Update: 11:35EDT – Union Gas is advising that it is likely that the evacuation of people from the impacted area will be for at least the next three hours. 

The Fire Rescue service is on the scene of an apparent natural gas leak. Thunder Bay Police are on scene assisting in traffic control and evacuations of impacted areas.

Fire Rescue and Union Gas are on the scene. Residents in the area have been asked to keep their doors and windows closed. Police are currently evacuating Rupert Street.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has set up a command post, Thunder Bay Police are at 10:45EDT requesting the the location of the command post be moved to an upwind location for safety reasons.

Thunder Bay Police report: 

Thunder Bay Police are assisting Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue in closing roads and evacuating persons in the vicinity of Red River Road and Rupert Street.

The following streets are closed in this area: Rupert Street – Elizabeth – High – Beresford

Area of evacuation: Rupert Street between Red River Road and Beresford – Red River Road between Beresford and Winnipeg Avenue.

Police report that all persons in this area are being evacuated until further notice!

The incident started about 0930EDT.

The Fire Rescue Command has requested the area be blocked off.

That will impact traffic and transit routes.

At 10:08 Command has called for a transit bus to be deployed to the scene. It is estimated to be about half an hour.

Fire Rescue and Thunder Bay Police are evacuating buildings in the area, including the chiropractic office and the daycare and along Rupert Street.

10:27EDT – Residents along Rupert Street are being evacuated. Thunder Bay Police are in command of the evacuation.

The Waldorf Building is being checked for gas leaks. Swirling winds are impacting the investigation of the apparent source of the leak.
