NANTHUNDER BAY, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) offered its condolences to the family and community of MoCreebec Council of the Cree Nation on the passing of Chief Randy Kapashesit.

“We worked closely with Chief Kapashesit on many issues over the years,” said Grand Chief Stan Beardy. “It is a great loss to the community and for the First Nations at large. He was a well-respected and dedicated leader who accomplished a lot for his community particularly in environmental and eco-tourism sectors. He has definitely left a legacy for many of us to follow.”

Chief Kapashesit dedicated himself to the life of his people at an early age, beginning his work with the Council as a student. He found his calling early in life leaving the island of Moose Factory to obtain a sociology degree from York University, returning upon graduation in 1986 and working tirelessly for his people ever since.
