Incident in North Spirit Lake Ends with Suspect in Custody

NAPSNORTH SPIRIT LAKE – Crimebeat – A fairly serious incident has ended in North Spirit Lake First Nation. On March 12, 2012, Nishnawbe-Aski Police were notified by the North Spirit Lake First Nation Council of an occurrence involving a barricaded male, and another male suffering from several stab wounds.

Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service Emergency Response Team, North West Region Crime Unit, and Uniform Patrol attended at North Spirit Lake.

Officers made contact with the barricaded male and set up to contain the scene for public safety.

The adult male victim was transported by air ambulance to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre for treatment for four stab wounds.

The Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team and Negotiators were called for assistance.

In the early morning of March 13, 2012, negotiations were successful with barricaded person turning himself in to police custody without incident.

Forty-two year-old Robert Anthony Rae has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Uttering Threats, and Breach of Probation. Rae is being held in custody for transport to Sioux Lookout, Ontario for a court appearance.

North Spirit Lake First Nation is located approximately 550 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
