Five golfers share the Manitoba Open lead at 8-under heading into the weekend at Elmhurst

SPRINGFIELD, Man. — SPORTS — It is crowded at the top of the leaderboard heading into the weekend at the Manitoba Open.

Austin Greaser of the United States, Daniel Svärd of Sweden, Garrison Smith of the United States, Adam Duncan of the United States and Chuan-Tai Lin of Chinese Taipei all reached the clubhouse at 8-under-par through 36 holes Friday at Elmhurst Golf & Country Club.

Just one shot behind is Cole Anderson of the United States at 7-under.

For golf fans in Northwestern Ontario, the Manitoba Open offers a close-to-home look at players trying to make the next step toward the Korn Ferry Tour and, ultimately, the PGA TOUR.

Five-Way Logjam Sets Up Weekend Drama

Elmhurst’s par-70, 6,856-yard Donald Ross layout has not surrendered low scores easily.

Half of the holes played to an over-par scoring average through the opening two rounds, and the cut came at 2-under, reducing the field from 156 players to 62 for the weekend.

That leaves five players sharing the lead — and all five entered the week outside the top 68 on the PGA TOUR Americas season-long points list.

In other words, there is a lot more than a trophy at stake.

Greaser Stays Steady at the Top

Austin Greaser, of Vandalia, Ohio, opened with a 65 and followed with a 67 to reach 8-under.

The 2021 U.S. Amateur runner-up entered the Manitoba Open after a tie for 18th at the Osprey Valley Open.

Greaser is looking for his first top-15 finish of the season and has now made four consecutive cuts after missing three of his first five starts during his rookie PGA TOUR Americas campaign.

Svärd Continues Strong Start to Professional Career

Daniel Svärd matched the lead with rounds of 67 and 65.

The Stockholm, Sweden golfer earned PGA TOUR Americas status through PGA TOUR University less than three months ago and is playing only his fourth professional event.

The Northwestern University product finished No. 19 in the 2026 PGA TOUR University Ranking and has already posted finishes of tied for 36th and tied for 31st this summer.

Now, after two rounds in Manitoba, he finds himself playing in the final groups on the weekend.

Smith and Duncan Stay in the Hunt

Garrison Smith, of Fort Worth, Texas, also reached 8-under with rounds of 67 and 65.

Smith is making his fourth start of the season after earning his place through a top-five finish at the Explore NB Open in July.

Adam Duncan, of Bakersfield, Calif., is right beside him after matching rounds of 66.

For Duncan, it marks his third made cut in nine starts — and his first in four events.

Lin Finishes With a Flourish

Chuan-Tai Lin delivered one of the strongest finishes of the day.

Playing in one of Friday’s final groups, Lin birdied both the 17th and 18th holes after play resumed following a weather delay of more than an hour.

Those closing birdies gave the New Taipei City golfer a second consecutive 66 and moved him into the five-way tie at 8-under.

That is the kind of finish that can change the complexion of a tournament heading into moving day.

Weather Interrupts Second Round

Play was suspended at 4:37 p.m. CT because of inclement weather.

Golf resumed at 5:45 p.m.

Conditions were partly cloudy for much of the day, with a high of about 25 C and northerly winds around 16 km/h. Thunderstorms developed later in the afternoon and evening, with stronger gusts accompanying the weather system.

Despite the interruption, the second round was completed and the stage is now set for the weekend.

Second-Round Leaderboard

Position Player Score
T1 Austin Greaser, USA -8 (65-67)
T1 Daniel Svärd, Sweden -8 (67-65)
T1 Garrison Smith, USA -8 (67-65)
T1 Adam Duncan, USA -8 (66-66)
T1 Chuan-Tai Lin, Chinese Taipei -8 (66-66)
6 Cole Anderson, USA -7 (67-66)

Moving Day Could Reshape the Tournament

Saturday’s third round now becomes the traditional “moving day,” and with six players separated by only one shot at the top, there is little room for error.

Elmhurst has already shown that patience matters.

Players have had to manage a course where birdie opportunities exist, but mistakes can quickly push a round in the wrong direction.

With all five co-leaders also fighting to improve their position on the PGA TOUR Americas points list, the weekend carries added significance.

Road to the Korn Ferry Tour

PGA TOUR Americas is designed as a development pathway toward the Korn Ferry Tour and eventually the PGA TOUR.

The 2026 schedule features 15 events in nine countries.

The season concludes in October with the Dominican Republic Tour Championship presented by Scotiabank.

At the end of the season, the top 10 players on the PGA TOUR Americas points list earn Korn Ferry Tour membership for the following season.

Johnny Keefer finished No. 1 on the points list in 2024 and Michael Brennan did the same in 2025. Both went on to earn PGA TOUR cards for the 2026 season.

For the five players sharing the Manitoba Open lead, this weekend at Elmhurst could prove to be an important step along that road.
