Three Dead Following Highway 17 Collision West of Marathon

MARATHON — Three people have now died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Prairie River, west of Marathon.

The deaths underline the serious consequences of collisions along the Trans-Canada Highway, a critical transportation route connecting communities, emergency services and commercial traffic across Northwestern Ontario.

Additional Deaths Confirmed by Ontario Provincial Police

Marathon Ontario Provincial Police officers and paramedics responded to the collision at approximately 4:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 15.

A 58-year-old Marathon man was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that day.

Police say an 80-year-old Terrace Bay woman who was travelling as a passenger in the second vehicle died in hospital on Thursday, July 16.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 79-year-old Terrace Bay man, died Monday, July 20, from injuries sustained in the collision.

Police have not released the names of the deceased.

Investigation Remains Active

The OPP has not released information about what may have caused the collision or whether road, weather or vehicle conditions were contributing factors.

No charges have been announced.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as investigators complete their work.

Police Seeking Witnesses and Dashcam Video

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam or other video recorded near Prairie River at the time of the incident is asked to contact the OPP.
