Thunder Bay Fire Rescue rescues unconscious person from ice near train trestle

THUNDER  BAY – NEWS – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue carried out an ice rescue near Syndicate Avenue and William Street after reports that a person may have fallen from a train trestle.

Firefighters found the individual unconscious on the ice, brought them safely to shore and transferred them to paramedics for transport to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

The incident is a sharp reminder for Thunder Bay residents that rail trestles and late-season river ice can quickly become life-threatening hazards.

Crews respond to report of possible fall

Fire crews were dispatched after receiving a report that someone may have fallen from a train trestle in the area of Syndicate Avenue and William Street. On arrival, firefighters located an unconscious person on the ice below.

Four firefighters using specialized ice rescue equipment reached the individual, stabilized them and brought them safely to shore. The patient was then handed over to paramedics and taken to hospital for further treatment.
