THUNDER BAY – NEWS – A 27-year-old man is to remain in custody after Thunder Bay Police officers responded to a weapons-related incident on Court Street South on December 2, 2025, that injured one person.
The Break, Enter, and Armed Robbery (BEAR) Unit and the Primary Response Unit got to the scene around 1:15 p.m. and found a man who had been stabbed multiple times. The victim was taken to the hospital, where they are now in stable condition.
Police found and arrested a suspect after searching the area.
Keenan MATTINAS, 27, has been charged with Aggravated Assault under Section 268(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada as a result of the investigation.
What is aggravated assault?
According to Section 268(1), aggravated assault happens when someone hurts, maims, disfigures, or puts another person’s life in danger. Under Canadian law, it is one of the most serious types of assault.
Possible Penalty: Aggravated assault is a crime that can lead to up to 14 years in prison if you are found guilty.
More Charges Related to Previous Theft
Along with the assault charge, MATTINAS has also been charged with a robbery that happened on November 25, 2025, at a Cumberland Street North convenience store.
He is being charged with robbery under Section 343(a) of the Criminal Code, which covers theft that involves violence or threats of violence.
Possible punishment: Robbery is a crime that can be charged with a maximum sentence of life in prison if a weapon is used or someone is seriously hurt.
There is still an investigation going on into both cases.
Court Case Updates
Keenan MATTINAS, the accused is still in jail and will go to court on a later date. His detention is in line with public safety concerns because the crimes he is accused of are violent.
The Thunder Bay Police Service is still looking into both cases, and anyone who knows anything about either of them is asked to call the police or send in an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
