THUNDER BAY – LOCAL NEWS – At 2:35 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire at a multi-unit building on Bay Street.

The first-arriving crew found smoke and flames showing from the second floor and launched a rapid exterior attack, bringing the blaze under control and preventing it from spreading to other suites.

Damage from smoke and fire was contained to one unit. Power to the building was disconnected, and occupants of neighbouring units were temporarily displaced. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A total of six Pumpers, one Aerial Ladder, and the Command Vehicle attended the incident.

TBFR Reminder: Safe Disposal of Smoking Materials

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue urges residents to use extra caution with smoking at home:

  • Smoke outside whenever possible; never smoke in bed or when drowsy or impaired.

  • Use a deep, sturdy ashtray on a stable, non-combustible surface; never a plant pot or cardboard.

  • Douse butts fully—soak in water or sand before discarding; empty ashtrays into a metal container.

  • Keep lighters/matches away from children and pets.

  • Check sofas, balconies, and decks for smouldering embers before you go to sleep.

  • Install and test smoke alarms monthly; keep a working fire extinguisher handy.
