No New Fires in Northwest Region, But Hazard Remains High in Red Lake and Kenora Areas

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE — As of 5:56 p.m. CDT on September 14, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) reports that no new wildfires were confirmed in the Northwest Fire Region. However, 11 active fires remain in the region, with varying levels of control.


Fire Status Overview:

  • 3 fires are currently under control

  • 8 fires are being observed

  • No new fires reported in the past 24 hours

Fire Hazard Conditions: High in the North, Lower in the South

The wildland fire hazard varies significantly across Northwestern Ontario:

  • High fire hazard areas:

    • Red Lake

    • Kenora

    • Dryden

    • Sioux Lookout

  • Moderate to low hazard conditions:

    • Fort Frances

    • Thunder Bay

    • Nipigon

Outdoor Burning: Know the Rules

With fall cleanup underway, AFFES reminds residents to follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations:

  • Fires may only be ignited two hours before sunset

  • Fires must be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise

  • Always have water and tools nearby

  • When possible, compost or bring yard waste to a landfill instead of burning
