Does paying for parking meters take the "boom" out of downtown shopping?

Thunder Bay – Thunder Bay residents are being called upon to voice their opinions on a new plan aimed at ensuring the financial sustainability of the Thunder Bay Parking Authority. The proposal, which includes changes to city parking, is now open for public commentary.

The Parking Authority Financial Plan, which proposes several changes including increased parking rates and the introduction of paid parking at the waterfront, will be initially presented to the City Council on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023. A subsequent presentation, incorporating public feedback, is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2024.

Keri Greaves, Acting General Manager – Corporate Services, emphasized the plan’s focus on reducing reliance on taxpayer funds. “This plan will help the Parking Authority be less dependent on the taxpayer,” she said. The goal is to find a balance between affordability for residents and financial sustainability for the city’s parking infrastructure.

The City of Thunder Bay is actively seeking feedback on various aspects of the plan, including the types of parking services residents use and their views on how parking should be funded. “We want to hear what the public’s thoughts are on the proposed changes,” Greaves added, highlighting the importance of community input in shaping the final plan.

Residents can participate in the process by completing a survey available on the city’s Get Involved website at www.thunderbay.ca/getinvolved. The survey provides a platform for citizens to express their views and preferences regarding the proposed parking changes. It will be open until Jan. 8, 2024, giving the public ample opportunity to contribute their insights and suggestions.
